Wayne: Steve, I've always loved your work. Keep it up.

Steven Brown: The two volumes are separated at an angle to allow for more overflow space in thee living room. This is a young couple who likes their video games, and this would allow them to push the furniture out of the way to play when friends come over.

Steven Brown: I wanted to add that the house could be built in two phases. The main house could be built first, then when the couple has children to move into the front bedrooms they could build the office / studio in the back of the house. This idea of master planning the house, would allow the home to grow with the family; making it much more affordable and suitable over time. Thank you all for the comments and votes.

Greg La Vardera: This is a great scheme - I love the play between the two volumes of rooms. And this is something plausible for a middle class home owner to afford. This should have more votes than it does.

John K. Brown: Nice layout, attractive design
  • 3/3/2010

Mike: From the living room, you'd see the water closet of the shared bath unless you kept the door close, otherwise, not a bad design.

Charlene: This design is not only an excellent Starter House, but the floor plan, square footage and garage area would be an outstanding plan for a couple who are reaching retirement age and have the need to down-size from a larger family home.

Stacey: Nice layout! I especially like the breezeway and ability to compartmentalize the bedroom spaces.
  • 3/3/2010

Scott: The open floor plan is very appealing and is something that is not always seen in a starter house.
  • 3/3/2010

Andrew: I see that the architect, from the US South...has taken full advantage of the traditional and originally-sustainable building typology of the dogtrot. With the endcap doors open, this layout - with the slight uplift of the roof eaves, should allow for additional cooling within the center of the house and the south facing rooms in the late afternoon. Good job. Vernacular typologies, oft missed to go the route of 'current design styles'...are as important to new-sustainability as materials, cisterns, green walls, solar collectors, etc. Vernacular typologies developed out of necessity and should at least be the seed/starting point of any design work.

sheila: So much to love in this design; I like that the play lawn is visible from many points; love the separate studio space.
  • 3/3/2010

    Jamie: Wonderful plan-very livable.

cathi: Love this design! The sunset deck and separate studio space are fantastic; so many options there. My bit of constructive criticism would be the small closet in the master.
