The second floor is well underway. We lost a day this week to the frigid cold and the snow, but it’s still moving along quite fast and I hope that we are weather tight within two weeks. The one thing you usually have to worry about with framing is the sub-floor getting wet too often because with traditional plywood, it can start to delaminate. The product that we chose for the sub-floor is called Advantech (http://www.huberwood.com/main.aspx?pagename=advantechflooring) by Huber Wood. It was recommended to us by many builders because it is virtually unaffected by water, does not need to be sanded and comes with a 50 year warranty. It also doesn’t contain any formaldehyde glue. So far it has dried quickly and seems very solid. We went with the ¾ inch thick version and low-VOC DAP construction adhesive. All boards are glued and nailed with ring nails and will also be screwed before the hardwood goes down for extra rigidly and to eliminate any possible floor bounce. More on Advantech to follow.
