So we are already a little over budget, which is to be expected. This phase of the project is where you have the most unknowns, largely due to not knowing what is in the ground and this has been true to form with issues such as excess waste removal, tree stumps, etc . As we started to remove the old foundation today, we hit ledge, which was one of my concerns. Fortunately, Bill, our builder recently built a house a few streets away which had about four times the amount of ledge and he learned the hard way how to best deal with it. Right now we are leaning towards using a very high powered chipper versus a blaster given the scope. Paying for the more powerful machine upfront costs more, but ensures that we don’t have to chip away slowly only to have to go back and get the bigger machine anyway or resort to blasting. Again, it’s a bummer, but not totally unexpected given the area of town we are building which is known for ledge. However, I am looking forward to getting the foundation in and getting to the “known cost” phase of the project.
