I have talked about this earlier, but if you want to have a healthy home, then you need to make sure you keep water away from and out of your home. In addition to the waterproofing of the foundation and the rigid foam drainage insulation, we have also installed two drainage systems, an interior and exterior perimeter drain. This is the type of short money investment that many contractors would skimp on altogether or do one or the other for a SPEC home, however you should make sure you add both to your new home.
The exterior perimeter draining consists of perforated PVC pipe under crusted stone and filter fabric which channels water from the outside of the house near the footings into a dry well. The interior drain works the same way, but is designed to target any water that comes from under the foundation. The pipes in this case are connected to a canister for a sump pump, helping to direct the water there if there are any issues. This strategy helps deal with exterior and interior water in different ways, rather than just relying on one system. It’s the sort of thing that adds a few hundred dollars to your bill, but may save you thousands later on.
