More About Sterritt’s Association With The ForestStewardship Council…

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organizatio ndevoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets highstandards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible,socially beneficial, and economically viable way.

Landowners and companies that sell timber or forest products seek certificationas a way to verify to consumers that they have practiced forestry consistentwith FSC standards. Independent, certification organizations are accredited byFSC to carry out assessments of forest management to determine if standardshave been met. These certifiers also verify that companies claiming to sell FSCcertified products have tracked their supply back to FSC certified sources.This chain of custody certification assures that consumers can trust the FSClabel.  Sterritt Lumber is a certifiedchain of custody supplier, distributor, and remanufacturer of FSC woodproducts.

Here is a summary of some of the points theFCS requires in its full chain of custody. Many of the points listed below willappear almost basic – but in many places even these basic requirements are notfulfilled. This is where the FSC and by association, Sterritt Lumber can havethe biggest positive impact on our environment.

• Prohibit conversion of forests or any other natural habitat
• Respect of international workers rights
• Prohibition of use of hazardous chemicals
• Respect of Human Rights with particular attention to indigenous peoples
• No corruption – follow all applicable laws
• Identification and appropriate management of areas that need    special protection (e.g. cultural or sacred sites, habitat of endangered animals or plants)

Meranti dimensionaldecking is prized by European and American architects for high-class joineryapplications. These species provide the ultimate combination of beauty,versatility, performance and economy for decking and related products. They mill to a superior surface,work easily, absorb and hold finish deeply and evenly. The timber ages to asmooth surface, with less checking (cracking) than other harder, heavier, andmore expensive species.  Harvested fromforests in Malaysia under the strictest FSC guidelines, Sterritt Lumbersupplies this high quality decking in 1 x 4 and 5/4 x 6 dimensions.  Sterritt is proud to stock this material bothbecause of its quality and the fact that its forests of origin are cared forand forested using the criteria of the FSC.

FSC CenturionPrimed Pine

Withthe introduction of CenturionTM, ClaymarkUSA® will usher in the most advancedexterior radiata trimboard available in North America. Sold by Sterritt Lumber,this preservative treated finger jointed radiata pine is grown, manufacturedtreated and primed by Claymark® in New Zealand and comes with a 25-yearwarranty. The patented treatment process is known as TruCore and assurespenetration to the core of each board. As a result, cut surfaces, end anddrilled holes do not require re-treatment at the jobsite like other treatedboards on the market. The components of the TruCore treatment have been usedfor over 50 years with an excellent performance history. In fact, these verycomponents are recognized by the Window and Door Manufacturers Association(WDMA), and the American Wood Preservers Association (AWPA) and are allregistered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Anotherpositive attribute of the TruCore® process is that it does not use VolatileOrganic Compounds (VOC's), heavy metals, arsenic chromium, or similarmaterials. The result is a product that is treated to the core with no risk offumes emissions at the jobsite or in the home.
