Radiant heat was not in the budget for the whole house, but we did
include it in the master bathroom and mudroom, using an electric
radiant heat product from Warmly Yours (www.warmlyyours.com). We used the Warmly Yours
product in our last house and loved it and it was also something
potential buyers definitely noticed. The addition of the radiant heat
in the master bath is really for comfort because with forced air
heating, the floor tile in the bathroom will still be cold in a New
England winter. It feels much more pleasant to step out of the shower
onto a warm floor and we also noticed that it helped to dry the floor
faster, which is why we also are adding electric radiant to the mudroom
this time around.
The folks from Warmly Yours have a great product and
customer experience and the product is very reasonably priced. We
submitted our measurements online and then their engineering team
created a custom quote and diagram for each room. Warmly Yours shipped the whole package in a few days,
complete with the electric mat, thermostat, detailed custom
installation instructions and a special sensor to use during
installation to make sure the wires aren’t nicked. Installing the
product is pretty straight forward; either your tile guy or electrician
is probably the best choice. Basically, they follow the template and
cut the mesh mat (not the wire) at the appropriate measurements,
following the custom layout plan. The green heating mat is nailed or
stapled to the subfloor before the tile goes down and is buried in a
layer of thinset under the tile. If you are handy, you could probably
handle it yourself, but if it’s your first time I would leave it to the
professionals.
Even though it is electric, the Warmly Yours product uses surprisingly
little electricity (a few cents a day) and draws from a standard
circuit. When you chose the Energy-Star rated programmable thermostat,
it comes with a sensor which lets your set and maintain the actual
floor temperature and choose settings for based on time of day (i.e.
morning wake up and bed). I can definitely recommend the Warmly Yours
product based on my own experiences with both the product and their
customer service team and it’s a really smart thing to add to a new or
master bath renovation. They also have an excellent “No Nonsense”
warranty which states that if there is a failure, they will cover both
the product and labor costs to fix it which goes beyond any other
product out there. I am never a fan of companies who promise to fix
their product only, when the labor required to do so could be 10x the
product cost; it’s sort of disingenuous.
Note: I would strongly recommended getting the product onsite before
your electrician is done with the rough electrical as the location of
the thermostat is important and depending on the size of the mat, it
may require a dedicated circuit. Also, make sure to give your tile guy
a heads up as well so he can plan for the install.
